Opening Scene

—-

Created using Mythic 4W Method

Who – (reassuring, triumphant)

What – (separate, safety)

Where – (frightening, personal)

Why – (flee, interior)

Trineth’s home is attacked by hostile fey. Their mother, Amber, urges them to leave the plane through a nearby manifest zone. Trineth, saddened but dutiful to their mother, obeys and makes for the portal.

“I promise I’ll be okay. They won’t harm me, I promise.”

Amber’s eyes gleam as she reassures me, gripping my arm tight. “But they may hurt you. You need to go. To the Material Plane.”

Outside, a magical dance of flame, darkness and anger surrounded our home. The Winter Court’s current icy coverage over the Moonlit Vale is barely visible. The air was choked with smoke and the smell of burning foliage. I’ve gathered my things and give my mother one last firm hug. I want to stay, want to protect her, but know I’d cause more harm if I did. I eventually leave home and start making my way to the nearby manifest zone. It appeared just two years ago and still remains. It resides over a small stream of magical water about 10 minutes from our home.

(Fate Question – “Are there any hostile fey nearby?” – Yes) (foolish, violent) (“Do they see me?” – Exceptional No)

I spot two winged fey in the distance, causing wild destruction with fire magic as they cackle to themselves. In their wild destruction, the fey don’t notice me and my movement at all.

Stealth Check (Advantage – DC 10): 18 + 0 – Success

I sneak past the flailing fey and make my way down to the stream. I wade through the brush till I reach the water near the bottom of a hill. The magical water hums with concerned tension and emotional confusion.

Perception Check to See Portal (DC 10): 14 + 2 – Success

I see the shimmer of the edges of the manifest zone, lining the trees and the water. As I walk over the stream and through the manifest zone, the setting around me turns to the drab and basic foliage of Eberron. The vibrant colors and magical foliage of Thelanis disappears. The water turns to a pale, dirty white from its once vibrant, shimmering blue. I’ve arrived at the water stream that’s south of a small farming town I’ve visited a couple times before, named Wellspring.

(Fate Question – “Does the portal stay open?” – No)

The manifest zone suddenly closes behind me. Not in a big flash. Not with a boom. Just a whisper, a change in the wind. The manifest zone that was the one connection you knew to your home is gone forever.

My emotions flood my mind now that the adrenaline from my escape has faded. I begin to cry. Why did the fey attack? Is it what took father years ago, is that why mother was sure she’d be safe? I wipe the tears from my eyes as I trod my way up and out of the stream, planning to head to Wellspring. I must find another portal or an answer in the material plane. There has to be something or someone to explain this, or a portal that’s still open.

Opening Scene Ends

End of Scene Bookkeeping: Added Hostile Fey to Character List, added goal “Find out why the fey took Amber” to Threads, decreased Chaos Factor by 1.
